Q643: Please Explain Luke 15:11-32. Some Preachers Say That The Father Was a Distressed Person as He Was Not Happy With Both of His Sons. The Older Son Was a Selfish, Hypocrite, and Mischievous Person?

Shalom brother, While explaining "the Parable of the Lost Son " (Luke 15:11-32). I have heard some Preachers saying that the Father was a distressed person as He was not happy with both of His Sons:

1.The younger son put him miserable by getting separation and spoiling his portion in bad company.

2. The older son became angry and refused to welcome his younger brother on his return after spoiling his portion in doing bad. But it is also true that he agreed to attend the feast as a result of his father's pleading. Unlike his younger brother he didn't demand separation from his father, he kept on working in the fields of his father for the prosperity of the family.

So why some preachers say that the older son was a selfish, hypocrite, and mischievous person? Whereas it is written for him Luke 15:31" My Son,' the Father said,' you are always with me ,and everything I have is yours." Please help me to understand the thought.

Let's quote Luke 15:15-32. The Scriptures are all from the Modern King James Version (MKJV).
  • A certain Man had TWO SONS. (Luke 15:11)
  • And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that is coming to me. And he divided his living to them. (Luke 15:12)
  • And not many days afterward, the younger son gathered all together and went away into a far country. And there he wasted his property, living dissolutely. (Luke 15:13)
  • And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land. And he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country. And he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. (Luke 15:14-15)
  • And he was longing to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, and no one gave to him. And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father abound in loaves, and I perish with hunger! (Luke 15:16-17)
  • I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you and am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. (Luke 15:18-19)
  • And he arose and came to his Father. But when he was still a great way off, his Father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. (Luke 15:20)
  • And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before you, and am no more worthy to be called your son. (Luke 15:21)
  • But the Father said to His servants, Bring the BEST ROBE and PUT IT ON HIM. And put a RING ON HIS HAND and SHOES ON HIS FEET. (Luke 15:22)
  • And bring the fattened calf here and kill it. And let us eat and be merry, for this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found. And they began to be merry. (Luke 15:23-24)
  • And His elder son was in the field. And as he came and drew near the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. (Luke 15:25-26)
  • And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your Father has killed the FATTENED CALF because he has received him SAFE and SOUND. (Luke 15:27)
  • And he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his Father came out and entreated him. (Luke 15:28)
  • And answering he said to his Father, Lo, these many years I have served you, neither did I transgress your commandment at any time. And yet you never gave me a kid so that I might make merry with my friends. (Luke 15:29)
  • But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you have killed for him the FATTENED CALF. And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. (Luke 15:30-31)
  • IT WAS RIGHT that we should MAKE MERRY and BE GLAD, for this Brother of yours was DEAD and is ALIVE AGAIN; and was LOST, and is FOUND. (Luke 15:32)
GOD WILL JUDGE YOU ACCORDING TO THE USE OF YOUR FREEWILL OR HUMAN RIGHT.

Man was given the Test of FREEWILL to determine whether he/she will OBEY GOD or NOT. If this FREEWILL is used in consonance with GOD The FATHER'S WILL, then one will be given ETERNAL LIFE (John 17:3, Matthew 7:21).

  • This is ETERNAL LIFE, that THEY SHOULD KNOW YOU, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, and HIM WHOM YOU SENT, YESHUA the Messiah. (Joh 17:3 HNV)
  • Not everyone who says to Me, Lord! Lord! shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER in Heaven. (Mat 7:21 MKJV)
The Younger Son in the above story initially use his FreeWill to squander his inheritance. But, in the End, he used his FreeWill to go back and be subjected to The FATHER. That is, he is now very willing (by his own FreeWill) to DO the WILL of God The FATHER.

But, the Older Son was not happy about this development, which means that he don't know the WILL of God the FATHER. The attitude of this older Son shows that we can serve God the FATHER, even for so long a time, yet, NOT Knowing and DOING the WILL of GOD The FATHER.

If the Test of FREEWILL is used consistently AGAINST GOD The Father's WILL, then one will be given ETERNAL DEATH (Genesis 2:17, Psalms 37:22, Revelation 20:14-15). In other words, he/she will NOT be allowed to inhabit God's Universe.
