Q200: I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT CHALLAH BREAD FOR SHABBAT. Do I Make 1 or 2 Loaves? And Can We Eat Whatever Remains After Shabbat; or Do We Throw Them Away?

Hi Lope,

I want to know about Challah bread for Shabbat. Do I make 1 or 2 loaves? And can we eat whatever remains after Shabbat because there is some left over; or do we throw them away? Not sure. Thanks in advance.

Q1. Do I make 1 or 2 loaves?

A1: We have to make two (2) Loaves. This is to commemorate the event of the 40-year travel of the Israelites in the desert, wherein God rained Manna Bread from Heaven for their daily food. During the ordinary 5 Days of the week God rained only what is sufficient for the day. But, there is no Manna that fell from Heaven every 7th-Day Sabbath. The supply for the 7th-Day Sabbath was included on the 6th Day (Friday), which means that a double portion of Mannah Bread was given in honor of the Sabbath (Exodus 16:5, 29).
  • ...The LORD hath given you the SABBATH, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the BREAD OF TWO DAYS; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. (Exo 16:29 KJV)
  • And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be TWICE AS MUCH as they gather daily. (Exo 16:5 KJV)
Thus, there are TWO (2) CHALLAHS  (LOAVES) on the Shabbat Table, to commemorate this double portion that fell on Friday in honor of the Sabbath

The challah we eat on Shabbat is in place of that Manna Bread, reliving the Manna miracle at our Sabbath meal (Exodus 16:4).
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain BREAD from Heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my Law, or no. (Exo 16:4 KJV)
Q2. Can we eat whatever remains after Shabbat? Because there is some left over; or do we throw them away?

A2. We don't eat whatever leftover remains of the Challah, after the Sabbath. We must burn the leftovers until they are inedible. Then, we throw them away.
  • IF ANY…OF THE BREAD REMAINS until the morning, then you shall BURN THE REMAINDER with Fire. IT SHALL NOT BE EATEN, because IT IS HOLY. (EXO 29:34 MKJV)
