Q745: I Bet The Selection Process For The Nuclear Plant Was Tough, Right Lope? You Have To Pass Through The "EYE OF A NEEDLE" or The Method Was I Believed as The "Inverted Triangle."

I bet the selection process at NPC was also tough, right Lope? Dadaan ka sa butas ng karayom or the method was I believed termed as the "Inverted Triangle".

I remember that back in the early 80's, I received a telegram for a job opportunity at BNPP and at PNOC. The test center was in Makati. I went to the PNOC testing center instead and passed it. There were like over a hundred job applicants at that time that we filled the auditorium. Only the top 20% moved to the face-to-face interview and fewer than half got hired. So I went to become a process engineer with PNOC and stayed for close to 9 years of my engineering career with them.

Engr. Arnel Amador
Oxnard, California, USA

Lope Columna Yes, Arnel. The selection process for those Filipino Engineers who will operate and maintain the First Philippine Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP-1) in Bataan was really, really very tough.

From the many applicants from NAPOCOR, MIESCOR or MERALCO, and others, 35 Top Filipino Engineers were selected. We could say these 35 engineers were the Finalists.

Only the Top 12 from among these Top 35 Filipino Engineers were to be sent to the USA for Nuclear Training by Westinghouse. Thus, these 35 Engineers were given more than one-month seminar about the conventional Balance of Plant (BOP) and Nuclear Side of a typical Nuclear Power Plant. The Seminar includes both Written and Oral Exams.

1. A weekly written exams were given to each one us.

2. Included is a walk-through or on-site exam about the equipment, controls, and other innards of the BNPP or PNPP-1.

3. Each one of us was exposed to Panel interviews of both the NAPOCOR and Westinghouse Management.

4. Each of us must be able to draw the correct Flow Diagrams of the many systems of the Nuclear Power Plant.

5. We must be able to explain the Functions, Principles, and Safety Features of all of those. And these we must be able to do quickly, without any hesitation or doubt.

6. We must look directly and straight to the eyes of the examiner when giving answers. Looking to the ceiling or somewhere else, before answering questions can disqualify the applicant.

7. The Final Exam and interviews were conducted mainly by Westinghouse Consultants.

And believe it or not, your friend and classmate from Masbate High School, got the NO. 1 slot! Your classmate is the Number 1 among them all. It's hard for me to believe it then. But, I know that God Almighty is with me!

Ed Gata I always knew you're meant to be one of the best, if not the best.

Edgar Oliva Ha! 'Showed them how Lope!

Arnel Amador I'm proud of you Lope!!

Nhelram N. Elsah Hi Sir, galing! Thanks, God bless you!

Lope Columna The result of the seminar determined the Top Twelve (12) out of the 35 candidates. The Top Twelve (12) composed the Philippine Nuclear Group called RO-12C. This RO-12C were sent to the United States as Philippine SCHOLARS to study Nuclear Engineering at the Westinghouse Nuclear Training Center (WNTC) at Zion, Illinois, USA. That is, we were trained by Westinghouse for nine (9) months exclusively for the First Philippine Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP-1).

Arnel Amador How much MWe was BNPP or PNPP-1 designed for?

Lope Columna The PNPP-1 was designed for 620 Megawatts Net output (One Unit). The PNPP-1 also supplies 60 MW for its in-house loads. Thus, the Gross output of PNPP-1 is 680 Megawatts.

Precy Faustino Lazaro ITONG MGA PINAKITA MO AY VERY INFORMATIVE, I SALUTE ALL OUR ENGINEERS. SANA MABASA NG MGA KABATAAN ANG TUNGKOL SA BNPP

Therry Alpa Yes, yes.
