Q247: How About FASTING ON SHABBATH? Is It OK or Should It Be A Day After or Before?

I was wanting to know about fasting on Shabbat for Yom Kippur. Is that OK or should it be a day after or before? Thank You!

Hi, Lola,

The following General Instructions is my answer to your question:

One who is required to eat on Yom Kippur due to medical reasons, should not attempt to fast. The same Bible which commands us to fast on Yom Kippur tells us that guarding our health is far more important than fasting on this holy day. Just as a healthy person fulfills a the Commandment by fasting; an ill person does a Commandment by eating.

That is, in case of a medical emergency, or even if there is any question whether the condition is a medical emergency or not, the patient should be given food or medicine immediately. A person who is required to eat or drink due to illness, but afterwards feels strong enough to fast, must resume fasting. 

One who is weak and can only fast if he remains in bed all day, should not attempt to go to a Synagogue or Church. Rather, he/she should fast and remain in bed. 

The explanation is based on Christ's own words written on Mark 2:27 and Mark 3:1-5. 

• And He (Christ) again entered into the synagogue. And a man was there who had a withered hand. (Mar 3:1 MKJV)

• And they watched Him to see if He would HEAL HIM ON THE SABBATH DAY, so that they might accuse Him. And He said to the man who had the withered hand, Arise! Come into the middle. (Mar 3:2-3 MKJV)

• And He said to them, Is IT LAWFUL to DO GOOD ON THE SABBATH DAYS, or to DO EVIL? To SAVE LIFE, or to KILL? (Mar 3:4 MKJV)

• And looking around on them with anger, being grieved because of the HARDNESS OF THEIR HEARTS, He said to the man, Stretch out your hand! And he stretched it out. And his hand was restored whole, like the other. (Mar 3:5 MKJV)
