I have one question in mind, great Man of God, please can you define 1Corinthians 7:14-15 for me, that is my question for a long time...

  • For the UNBELIEVING HUSBAND IS SANCTIFIED BY THE WIFE, and the UNBELIEVING WIFE IS SANCTIFIED BY THE HUSBAND; else your Children would be unclean, but now they are Holy. (1Cor 7:14 MKJV)
  • But IF THE UNBELIEVING DEPART, LET HIM DEPART. A BROTHER OR A SISTER IS NOT UNDER BONDAGE IN SUCH CASES: but God hath called us to peace.   (1Cor 7:15 KJV)
Matthew Henry's Commentary on The Whole Bible, says: ...if an unbelieving husband or wife were pleased to dwell with a Christian relative, the other should not separate. The husband should not put away an unbelieving wife, nor the wife leave an unbelieving husband, 1Co_7:12, 1Co_7:13. The Christian calling did not dissolve the marriage covenant, but bind it the faster, by bringing it back to the original institution...binding them together for life. The believer is not by faith in Christ loosed from matrimonial bonds to an unbeliever, but is at once bound and made apt to be a better relative.

But, though a believing wife or husband should not separate from an unbelieving mate, yet if the unbelieving relative desert the believer, and no means can reconcile to a cohabitation, in such a case a brother or sister is not in bondage (1Co_7:15),...not bound to live unmarried after all proper means for reconciliation have been tried, at least of the deserter contract another marriage or be guilty of adultery, which was a very easy supposition, because a very common instance among the heathen inhabitants of Corinth.

In such a case the deserted person must be free to marry again, and it is granted on all hands. And some think that such a malicious desertion is as much a dissolution of the marriage-covenant as death itself. For how is it possible that the two shall be one flesh when the one is maliciously bent to part from or put away the other? Indeed, the deserter seems still bound by the matrimonial contract; and therefore the apostle says (1Co_7:11), If the woman depart from her husband upon the account of his infidelity, let her remain unmarried. But the deserted party seems to be left more at liberty (I mean supposing all the proper means have been used to reclaim the deserter, and other circumstances make it necessary) to marry another person.

MARRIAGE is sanctified by the holiness of either party: For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife by the husband (1Cor 7:14)

WHEN DWELLING TOGETHER, THE PURITY OF THE BELIEVER SPOUSE PURIFIES THE IMPURITY OF THE UNBELIEVING SPOUSE

So, as long as, the UNBELIEVING SPOUSE is dwelling together with the BELIEVING SPOUSE (without Adultery), he/she is covered with the Holiness and Purity of the Believing Spouse  To the pure all things are pure (Titus 1:15, Hebrews 13:4).
  • To the PURE ALL THINGS ARE PURE. But TO THOSE WHO ARE DEFILED AND UNBELIEVING NOTHING IS PURE, but even their mind and conscience is defiled. (Tit 1:15 MKJV)
Marriage is a divine institution; and its PURITY must be preserved and maintained. If the unbelieving spouse defiled the believer, or rendered him or her offensive to God, the divine purpose of marriage is annulled

A Christian or Jew may be married or yoked with unbelievers; yet, if he/she maintain his/her marriage in a Holy State, the unbelieving partner is sanctified. The Husband is sanctified for the wife's sake. And the Wife is sanctified for the Husband's sake. Both are one flesh. He is to be reputed clean who is one flesh with her that is holy, and vice versa. Otherwise, their children became unclean, but now are they holy (1Cor 7:14).

The DEPARTURE OR DISCONNECTION OF THE UNBELIEVING SPOUSE FROM THE BELIEVING SPOUSE ANNULS THEIR MARRIAGE

Nevertheless, if the UNBELIEVING SPOUSE decided to leave, in spite of all the effort to have reconciliation, then let him/her depart (1Cor 7:15, Deuteronomy 7:4, 2Cor 6:16).
  • For THEY WILL TURN AWAY THY SON FROM FOLLOWING ME, THAT THEY MAY SERVE OTHER GODS: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly. (Deu 7:4 KJV)
  • And WHAT AGREEMENT HATH THE TEMPLE OF GOD WITH IDOLS? for ye are the Temple of the Living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (2Cor 6:16 KJV)
In this case, the deserted spouse is not to be blamed. And if he/she marries again, he/she does not sin.

To quote Matthew Henry Commentary: Though a believing wife or husband should not separate from an unbelieving mate, yet if the unbelieving relative desert the believer, and no means can reconcile to a cohabitation, in such a case a brother or sister is not in bondage (1Co_7:15)

In such a case the deserted person must be free to marry again, and it is granted on all hands. And some think that such a malicious desertion is as much a dissolution of the marriage-covenant as death itself.

And we should remember that what we are talking here is about the LAW and STATUTES of GOD, not the LAW OF MEN. In the eyes of men, the legality of their Marriage is still in effect; but to God it is already annulled.

CHILDREN BORN OF THE UNBELIEVING SPOUSE DWELLING IN MARRIAGE WITH A BELIEVER, ARE HOLY

A child begotten by parents made proselytes was said to be begotten intra sanctitatem - within the holy enclosure. Therefore, the children born to believing Christians, though married to unbelievers, are not to be reckoned as part of the world. The Children are holy.

Another reason is that God has called Christians to peace, (1Cor 7:15). We are bound to live peaceably with all men (Romans 12:18), and therefore, surely to promote the peace and comfort of our nearest relatives, especially to those with whom we are one flesh.

Should your unbelieving spouse is willing to stay, strive for the conversion of your spouse. Endeavour to save a soul.
  • For YOU ARE A HOLY PEOPLE to the LORD your God: the LORD your God has chosen you to be a People for His own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the Earth. (Deu 7:6 HNV)
